Sloped yards along the side of a house are one of those problems that looks minor until you really think about it. Erosion. Unstable ground near the foundation. No usable space. That's exactly what we were working with at this Maple Grove home - a hillside that needed to be controlled and structured before it caused bigger issues down the road.
The solution was a two-tier block retaining wall system. Two separate wall levels stepping up the grade, with a gravel-filled platform tucked in between them. This approach breaks the slope into manageable sections instead of trying to hold everything back with one single tall wall. Structurally, that matters a lot - especially in Minnesota where freeze-thaw cycles put serious stress on hardscape over time.
We used a textured concrete block with a grey tone that ties in naturally with the home's exterior. The corners are clean, the courses are level, and the gravel bed between the tiers keeps water from pooling against the house. Every part of this was built to last, not just look good on day one.
What the homeowner ended up with is a side yard that's now fully stabilized and functional. No more washing soil, no more awkward slope to mow or worry about. Just a clean, structured wall system that does its job and holds up to whatever Minnesota weather throws at it.
